SENTIMENTS

an immersive photographic installation

On View: May 22nd - 30th, 2025

SENTIMENTS is an ongoing body of work that I began creating as part of my undergraduate photography thesis at the Savannah College of Art and Design in the spring of 2025.

The exhibition pictured below is a culmination of the work I created as a part of this series up until that point. It featured three images, each hung above a desk full of personal objects that was meant to be a representation of my own personal space.

ARTIST STATEMENT

It is often hard to put into words the emotions we as humans experience. This is true in my own life, as I often find myself struggling to identify emotions that are deeper and more complex. My most recent body of work, SENTIMENTS, seeks to create a means for me to better understand these different emotional states, as well as help guide me towards the acceptance of the ones that are harder to acknowledge. Through this series of photographs, I have gained a deeper understanding of myself, and it is my hope that those who view this work are able to see how this process has profoundly impacted me.

EXHIBITION LAYOUT

I began the process of creating the body of work that turned into SENTIMENTS with nothing but a journal and pen, writing down my thoughts and the emotions that accompanied them. I would often write these entries at my desk, and this space became the place where I was able to be the most vulnerable.

When it came time to begin thinking about how I wanted to display the accompanying photographs, I had the idea of re-creating this environment.

DESK

SYMBOLISM HIDDEN WITHIN

Some of the items I decided to include in this installation are ones that are typically found on a desk, while others serve a deeper purpose.

White items were meant to blend in with the gallery walls, while items that were black stood out because they held symbolic meaning. The journal, cassette player, clock, chair, and mixtape are all items that are meant to be interacted with, and each represents the process of self-reflection I went through when first beginning this body of work.

SENTIMENTS: THE MIXTAPE

One of the key elements of my immersive installation was the cassette player that was placed on the desk. Music is something that, for as long as I can remember, has played a big role in influencing how I feel, and while reflecting and writing about the different topics that would come to influence the displayed photographs, I would often listen to music.

I knew I wanted to incorporate music into the experience somehow, so I decided to create a mixtape on cassette of songs that I found resonated with the themes and concepts I was portraying in my photographs.

THE CASSETTE PLAYER

CASSETTE J-CARD DESIGN

Designed by me, the J-card features the title of the installation and artwork representative of its themes on the front, more information on the spine, and a tracklist of the included songs on the back.
